Dr. Browne recently posted photos of manual scavenging in India as a means of illustrating the power of photographs to demonstrate the visuals of a horrible practice. This reminded me of another set of photographs I recently viewed regarding another despicable practice – throwing acid in the faces of women who reject lovers. These attacks, like other inhumane forms of violence against women, often occur in societies lacking adequate women’s rights. The textual description of the practice pales in comparison to the gut-wrenching photographs of the women.
