If Life Is So Valuable, What Is the Basis for the Value?

This question gets very complicated when the life belongs to a person in his nineties who has his faculties and in a considered fashion wants to die.  http://citypaper.net/article.php?A-Bitter-End-20651

On what grounds do people who have no relationship with a person who wished to commit suicide resist that desire to commit suicide? What abstract lure has provided them with the audacity to claim that they are marching under the flag of sanctity of life, and THEY know what that term means?

In the article I am referencing in this post, the family understands, and although they might prefer their loved one to live, they have the grace to appreciate that they are not experiencing the pain and ennui that is rotting their loved one’s essence week after week.
