In a culture that confuses money with meaning, it is useful to our thinking to have an understanding of what such a conflation says about the U.S. The range and results derive from many things—control of the supply by existing members of an occupational grouping, relative success at grabbing and holding onto governmental subsidies, perceived social importance, and alleged level of difficulty.
